The women's tournament in volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics was held at Capital Indoor Stadium and Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium from 9 to 23 August 2008. The twelve competing teams were split equally into two pools of six teams. Each team played all other teams in their pool with the winning team gaining 2 points and the losing side 1 point. Women's Olympic Games 2008. Team USA accomplished its top season goal by qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games at the FIVB World Cup held in November 2007 in Japan. The Americans opened up the tournament with eight straight victories highlighted by a five-set rally over Brazil. After a stumble against Serbia to open the final stage in Nagoya, the U.S. rebounded to sweep host Japan to secure its ticket to Beijing in 2008.

Japan have a glittering Olympic history, claiming the first Women's Volleyball Olympic gold in Tokyo in 1964 and winning gold again in Montreal in 1976. In-between those dates, they won silver in Mexico in 1968 and Munich in 1972. They also won bronze in 1984 in Los Angeles.

Beach volleyball competitions were held from 9 to 22 August 2008 at the Beach Volleyball Ground at Chaoyang Park. The 2008 Summer Olympics volleyball competitions brought the introduction of the new ball with a new moulding design making it more softened compared to the Mikasa MVP200.
