The ITF (International Tennis Federation) sanctions a world-wide series of international 18/U tournaments each year making up the “ITF Junior Circuit”, which is aimed at improving competitive opportunities for juniors and helping them develop their skills so that they can compete at a professional level.

The first junior nationals event was created in 1886 by John Jardine who played for the Hawkes Bay Tennis Club. Representatives from many regions came to compete at this big event once every year. This event was originally based in Hawkes Bay then moved to Wellington. Nowadays the location of this event changes every so often.
