The Olympics and USA Volleyball Volleyball made its first Olympic appearance in the 1964 Summer Games in Tokyo, making 2020 special with the return to the birthplace of Olympic volleyball. USA Volleyball has a legacy of competitive success at the Olympic Games in indoor and beach volleyball disciplines winning nine gold, four silver, and seven bronze medals.

The US team are five-time Olympic medallists, which includes podium finishes at the last three editions of the Games, but they are yet to win gold. At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, the United States of America secured bronze with a 3-1 victory over the Netherlands in the third-place match after losing to Serbia in five sets in the semifinals. The US team had reached the final in 2008 and 2012 but were beaten by Brazil in four sets on both occasions.

The U.S. Women’s National Team is one of the strongest volleyball squads in the world. In 2014, the U.S. broke through for its first major gold medal, winning the FIVB World Championship, and they’ve medaled in every FIVB World Cup since 2003. The five-time Olympic medalists have been on the podium in each of the last three Olympic Games, and more recently, they’ve won the first two iterations of FIVB’s Volleyball Nations League, which began in 2018.

TOKYO (July 28, 2021) – The U.S. Men started strong but couldn’t keep pace with Brazil down the stretch, falling 3-1 (30-32, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20) on Friday at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. The U.S. Men and Brazil have a historic Olympic rivalry. The two teams have met twice in the gold medal match, 1984 and 2008.
